If-Satz Typ 2: Träume und Unwahrscheinliches

Der If-Satz Typ 2 beschreibt hypothetische oder unwahrscheinliche Situationen in der Gegenwart: If + Past Simple im Wenn-Satz, would + Infinitiv im Hauptsatz. Wichtig für deutsche Lerner: Auch wenn es um heute geht, steht im Englischen die Vergangenheitsform — If I had a boat heißt nicht, dass man früher ein Boot hatte.

Wenn ich ein Boot hätte, würde ich zu deinem Hafen segeln.

If I were — die Sonderform

In Typ 2 heißt es für alle Personen were: If I were rich, if she were here. Umgangssprachlich hört man auch If I was, aber die Standardform ist were. Die feste Redewendung If I were you (an deiner Stelle) benutzt immer were.

If I were braver, I would ask you to stay.

Wenn ich mutiger wäre, würde ich dich bitten zu bleiben.

Typ 1 oder Typ 2?

Typ 1 (If it rains, I will stay home) drückt eine reale Möglichkeit aus — Hauptsatz mit will. Typ 2 (If I had wings, I would fly) drückt etwas Unwahrscheinliches oder Unmögliches aus — Hauptsatz mit would. Der Song träumt in Typ 2 und endet mit derrealen Wendung: One day I will tell you.

If it rains, I will stay home. — If I had wings, I would fly.

Wenn es regnet, bleibe ich zu Hause. — Wenn ich Flügel hätte, würde ich fliegen.
